Shoopman Homes – Founder of Dura Builders
A Diamond Award Winning Builder with more than 10,000 homes under his carpenter’s belt, Paul Shoopman celebrates 43 years of successful new home construction with no plans to slow down.
INDIANAPOLIS – Few Indiana builders have endured 40 plus years in the new home building business; even fewer have turned the keys over to more than 10,000 satisfied new home buyers; and perhaps only Paul Shoopman can lay claim to starting an Indiana new home building business at only 18 years of age and turning that business into a multi-million dollar operation.
During his four decades in the industry, Shoopman has witnessed some of the most tumultuous and challenging economic periods in America – from 18 percent fixed 30-year mortgages to no-money-down homeownership, and from boom times to multiple recessions, the most recent of which has been likened by many as a depression in the industry. Shoopman’s business has thrived, while many others have failed, because of Shoopman’s keen insights into what home buyers want today and his almost clairvoyant ability to see where the industry is heading. His passion for the business and his 24/7 work ethic have served Hoosier new home buyers well.
Shoopman said, “I’ve endured 43 years – some of them very tough years, some great years – by promising to provide personal attention to every homebuyer. I still walk through and carefully inspect every new home to ensure my quality standards are met for our new home buyers.”
Shoopman, who has come from being one of the youngest builders in the city to being one of Indianapolis’s most admired and respected industry leaders, is one of only two Diamond Builder Award winners in Indiana, the highest professional recognition bestowed by 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty. Diamond Builders must exemplify not only exceptional warranty performance and personal reputation; they must also possess excellent financial stability, the highest standards in customer satisfaction and distinguished product design. Only 31 home builders in the nation are honored with this prestigious award.
Shoopman said, “Today we offer 69 floor plans within three different series of homes, and we are building in 23 communities throughout central Indiana. We have no plans to slow down. I love this business, and I love building dream homes for all kinds of Indiana families.”
For exceptional business leadership and customer service in the new home building industry for over 40 years, Paul Shoopman has personally earned a number of impressive national and regional accolades, including being named the national winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst & Young in 2003. He also has received the John C. Hart Sr. Presidential Award from Indiana Builders Association for contributions to the industry, and the Home Builder of the Year Award and the Mike Boehke Award from the Builders Association of Indianapolis.
Shoopman’s entry into the business began in 1971. At the age of 18, he bought his first parcel of land and constructed his very first home. Just a few years later, Shoopman founded his first home building company, Dura Builders. Today, he runs Shoopman Homes, a complete residential construction company offering semi-custom and custom homes, including single family detached homes and attached town homes.
During his 43 years of serving the Central Indiana community, Shoopman has supported numerous local charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Club, Indiana Crime Prevention, Disable American Veterans, Big Brothers, ST. Mary’s Child Care Center, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Center Grove Lassie League, Butler University 811 Carl Asaro Foundation, Millard Fuller Foundation, St. Vincent’s The Weekend to End Breast Cancer, Fraternal Order of Police, Zionsville Presbyterian Church, St. Vincent’s Foundation, Friendship Gardens Park, Trader’s Point Christian Church and Center Grove Presbyterian Church and many others too numerous to list.
Shoopman is married to his wife, Shelley, of more than 39 years and has six children. His daughter, Kourtney is also becoming a successful new home builder as well, Kourtney Homes.
